FraudNET is GAO's hotline for the public to report government fraud, waste, abuse, or mismanagement of federal funds. GAO is responsible for assisting the Congress in carrying out its oversight responsibilities pertaining to government programs, activities and functions. Generally, this involves examining the programs and operations of federal departments and agencies, rather than investigating allegations of wrongdoing by individuals. We take complaints from the general public and refer most of them to the appropriate oversight agency, unless we have audit work in that particular area already underway. Because our resources are finite, we focus our audits and investigations on those federal programs and activities that Congress has mandated or requested us to review.
